Reports to: Supervisor of Maintenance


 


Work Schedule: 261 Days 


                    


Salary Schedule: This is a full-time negotiated position.  Salary Grade 50A


 


Position Purpose: Estimates quantities, mixes and applies surface treatment to facilities and equipment, both interior and exterior.  Work involves spraying, brushing or roller application; installation of wallpaper is performed; and preparing walls and other surfaces for painting/varnish, etc.  Skill at matching and mixing colors and stains is mandatory.  Drywall, stucco and plaster repair is required.


 


Essential Performance Responsibilities



  • Read blueprints/instructions and examine surfaces to determine the kind and amount of work necessary. Good basic math skills.

  • Excellent knowledge of painting materials and how to select, mix and application. Mixes colors to match existing paint.

  • Estimates time and materials required for all sizes of jobs from small to full repaint of an entire school. Calculate costs and negotiate efforts for completion.

  • Aptitude in using appropriate tools (brushes, caulking guns, etc.)

  • Conducts surveys to ascertain condition of the total painted and stained/varnished surface to make recommendations for systems to correct problems.

  • Inspects work by contract for conformance to specifications.

  • Applies paint, surface pretreatments, sealants, varnishes and stains. Application may involve brush, roller or spray method.  Work may be indoors, outdoors or in a shop environment.

  • Prepares surfaces for and applies wallpaper, vinyl and cork surfacing.

  • Set scaffolding required to reach work area.

  • Limited repair of damaged or deteriorated areas of interior and exterior facilities to include dry wall taping floating, sanding and stucco or plaster repair.

  • Conducts surface preparation actions to minimize exposure to and transmission of lead contamination.

  • Applies striping and stencil applications to pavement and athletic surfaces.

  • Employee frequently works with little or no supervision and thus must make rational decisions on manner job is accomplished, solve problems and establish priorities.

  • Small scale job planning is routine. Must determine scope of work; planning and requisitioning materials, phasing necessary for job accomplishment; doing the work and completion of functions.

  • Conscientious with great attention to detail and the level of quality and quantity is that expected for a journeyman in the craft.

  • Trade related tasks as assigned by Supervisor of Maintenance Division.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Five (5) years commercial/industrial verifiable painting experience.

  • Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record

  • Must be able to lift tools and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds (lbs.)

  • Ability to climb ladders and work of scaffolding, up to fifty feet, with tools and equipment weighing a minimum of 30 lbs.

  • Agility to work in physically restricted areas and pass a pulmonary function test

  • Ability to pass functional assessment of physical abilities

  • Must be able to meet insurability requirements of the school district’s insurance carrier.


Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor and other central office administrators as designated by the Director of Buildings and Grounds.


 


Equipment:  This position may require the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with OPS’s guidelines for equipment use.


 


Travel:  Limited travel may be required.


 


Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:



  • Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations.

  • Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Work in school building and central office environments. 


Interrelations:



  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.

  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks.

  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.

  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.

  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.


Employee Punctuality and Appearance



  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.

  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.

  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.


 Terms of Employment


This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (if required for position offered).
