Leads an individual research program and performs work of unusual difficulty in the leadership, development, and coordination of research programs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Directs an individual research program within a particular Center for Research that is productive, collaborative and capable of securing external funding support.

  • Provides scientific leadership for laboratory directors within their specific Center for Research, encouraging them to maintain productive, collaborative research programs capable of securing external support. Provides direction for development of center grants when opportunities for center-grant funding are available.

  • Assists laboratory directors by advising on the content of grant applications, reviewing Summary Statements and encouraging others within the applicable Center for Research to maintain a collegial, supportive environment.

  • Works with the Coordinator of Research Administration and members of the accounting staff to develop annual budgets for the specific Center of Research.

  • Conducts annual performance evaluations of laboratory heads within the Center of Research.

  • Monitors compliance with BTNRH and FFBH policies by members of the Center staff and takes steps to assure compliance when necessary.

  • Represents research programs within the Center at meetings of the Research Executive Committee and in meetings with other senior administrators.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Secure external funding for center research programs.

  • Produce research that is published in the scientific literature.

  • Recruit, hire, evaluate and effectively supervise scientific and support staff.

  • Prepare budget projections, based on multiple revenue sources.

  • Interact effectively and collaboratively with staff members of related centers.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of theories, practices and methodologies in the relevant research areas.

  • Ability to supervise professional and support staff and interact effectively with staff members of related centers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in a related field required.

  • Minimum of five years of experience post-PhD as a laboratory director with a significant portion of that experience in an administrative capacity required.

  • Research capabilities as demonstrated by record of sustained experimental work published in major scholarly journals required.

  • Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative(CITI) certification within 30 days of transfer or hire required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, EQUIPMENT USAGE, WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position is relatively sedentary in a normal office administrative environment involving minimum exposure to physical risks. Will use office equipment such as a computer/laptop, monitor, keyboard, and a general workstation set-up.
