Summary of Position
This position will report to the Vice President, Underwriting and Commercial Mortgage Loans and is responsible for the day-to-day coaching and management of their Underwriting team; this includes the adequate pricing within established guidelines of submissions and the development of their direct reports. The Underwriting Manager will also have underwriting responsibilities and is expected to work with the VP – Underwriting and CML on high visibility/priority submissions. This position will have oversight of the Individual Solutions team.
As Manager of Underwriting (IS), responsibilities include:
Coaching and management of staff members within team with a focus on teaching, mentoring, and review of work.
Work within established internal guidelines.
Oversight and management of entire underwriting process, ensuring deadlines are being met and pended submissions are addressed in a timely manner.
Perform periodic quality reviews of work done by team members.
Evaluation and risk assessment of individual insurance applications. Decide on acceptance, rating or declination of applicants. Applications are often supplemented with medical records, court records, motor vehicle records, telephone interviews, paramedical exams, blood and urine results, identification reports, MIB and health questionnaires. Order and obtain requirements following underwriting and reinsurance regulations.
Communication verbal and written with general agents, insured, medical director or equivalent position, and other home office departments. Provide support by supplying medical expertise to field agents. Answer questions regarding our products and status of pending applications.
Reinstatement of applications and policy changes for all individual policies including worksite cases. Includes review of medical records if required. Review MIB follow up hits and rescissions.
Claim review and evaluation of individual claims within the contestability period.
Tele-underwriting - Telephone interviews with applicants for life insurance including worksite cases, reinstatements, policy changes and MIB follow up hits.
Reviews of all replacements, Medical records, adverse decisions and ratings for Underwriting staff.
Acts as main point of contact for third party relationships.
Assists in all internal and external audits.
Special department projects including new product development, training, and reporting as needed.
Qualifications & Knowledge Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent work experience required.
Experience: 7+ years of related insurance experience required
Knowledge Requirements:
Strong business knowledge.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively build and extend relationships.
Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with a strong decision-making capacity; demonstrated ability to take initiative with a “can do” attitude.
Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to context, substance and detail.
Excellent written/verbal communication and presentation skills.
Shows initiative with the ability to create and implement changes that will improve workflow.
Working knowledge of Boston Mutual Workplace Solutions or related industry products, enrollment systems and administrative processes preferred.
Exceptional skills using MS Office.
Certifications/Licensures: CLU and/or ALMI/FLMI preferred but not required. Pursuit of ALMI/FLMI expected.
