Purpose of Position: 

The Adoption Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the department and ensures staff adherence to protocol and policies. Provides supervision to Adoption staff, while working in conjunction with the VP, Business Operations, to include performance management, hiring, discipline, training, and termination. The Adoption Supervisor ensures that department goals are met, and quality customer service is provided. All duties and responsibilities will be carried out with the direction of the VP of Business Operations as needed.

This position reports to: Senior Operations Director 

This position supervises:  Adoption Coordinators

Hours: Full-time; 40 hours/week

Schedule: TBD (one weekend day required)

                                                                       

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Train and mentor adoption staff to ensure knowledge of department and agency policies and procedures
  • Regularly evaluate and give feedback to Adoption staff and volunteers to improve the quality of work and productivity 
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, evaluating, coaching and carrying out discipline for the Adoption staff while working in conjunction with the VP, Business Operations
  • Promote teamwork, communication, and cooperation between Adoption staff and all other departments, including volunteers, through positive and effective written and verbal communication
  • Always promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals. Maintain knowledge of cat and dog behavior and health, common issues, and ways to address them in order to make good adoption matches that will support keeping animals in their homes.
  • Manage Adoption staff schedule to ensure proper coverage
  • Actively engage with Adoption and PetSmart volunteers by providing training and supervision
  • Oversee NHS and PetSmart Charities partnership to achieve annual adoption goals by coordinating with NHS PetSmart volunteers, store managers, and associates as needed
  • Plan and coordinate adoption events
  • Resolve problems and address customer dissatisfaction by using good judgment to   remain calm in difficult situations
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all information
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications: Education, Experience, Certification, and Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Associates of Arts degree; Bachelor of Arts degree preferred. Qualifying work experience will be considered as an alternative.

 

  • Two years prior supervisory experience including hiring and delivering disciplinary actions
  • Work with, evaluate, coach and supervise a variety of staff and volunteers in an effective and respectful manner while holding individuals accountable for their results
  • Excellent customer service skills to promote a positive partnership among internal departments and the community
  • The ability to remain professional and calm in stressful situations
  • The ability to turn people down, firmly when necessary, without becoming aggressive or unpleasant
  • Knowledge of animal adoption best practices with the willingness and ability to promote change with the ongoing goal of removing barriers to adoption
  • Computer proficient with Word and Excel; ability to learn new programs required
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills 
  • Communicate with the public, volunteers, staff and co-workers in a pleasant, courteous and tactful manner at all times 
  • Demonstrates maturity, good judgment and professionalism. Good analytical skills and ability to identify issues/opportunities. Accomplishes problem-solving within existing resources; does not rely on additional dollars to resolve problems.
  • Be comfortable and skilled in working with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers and community.
  • Affection for animals, concern for their welfare and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.

  • High exposure to animals whose reactions to the shelter environment cannot be predicted.
  • Temperatures in the shelter environment are varied, though usually moderate, and dependent on the season.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to work around animals without severe allergic reactions.
  • Sit for long and short periods of time while using a computer.
